Top sheriff quits over sauna claims

A TOP sheriff has stepped down amid allegations he visited saunas.

Edinburgh-based Andrew Lothian, one of Scotland's most respected lawmen, has retired with immediate effect amid claims over his personal life.

The sheriff, who had been on the bench for 29 years, will keep his full pension after a long and distinguished career.

The Scottish Court Service yesterday confirmed Lothian "has retired with immediate effect following allegations that he visited saunas".

Lothian is the second sheriff to be embarrassed by his private life in recent years. Four years ago one of his colleagues, Hugh Neilson, was suspended after he was caught during a raid on Glasgow's Royale Sauna.

Labour MSP Richard Baker warned that such incidents were a threat to the justice system. He said: "This is very sad. The reputation of the judiciary is very important".
