Thousands in Dresden protest

Thousands of people formed a human chain in Dresden to protest against a far-right march yesterday on the 66th anniversary of the Allied bombing of the city in the Second World War.

City authorities said 17,000 people formed the chain around the rebuilt city centre. They were reported to include Germany's interior minister and Saxony's state governor.

On 13-14 February, 1945, three waves of British and US bombers destroyed Dresden's centuries-old Baroque city centre. An estimated 25,000 people were killed in the firebombing.
