Third City of Literature is written up

IOWA City has linked up with Edinburgh and Melbourne after being named the world's third City of Literature.

Iowa City is the creative writing capital of America and has a network of university, grassroots and civic institutions that teach, nurture and study great writing.

Since 1955 graduates of the University of Iowa have won more than 25 Pulitzer Prizes and authors who have lived and studied in the city include Kurt Vonnegut Jr, Robert Penn Warren, Robert Lowell, Flannery O'Connor and John Irving.

Ali Bowden, director of the Edinburgh Unesco City of Literature Trust, said: "We are delighted that Iowa City has been confirmed as the third City of Literature."
