A thief has claimed he was “too frightened” to attend court.

John Moffat’s lawyer said the last time his client appeared at Livingston Sheriff Court he was chased from the building by thugs wielding metal bars.

Moffat, 28, from Whitburn, had been due to appear for sentence yesterday, having pleaded guilty to stealing £400 worth of copper piping and other metal from houses in Fauldhouse and breaching a bail curfew.

Sheriff Susan Craig granted a warrant for Moffat’s arrest.
