Therapists to give elderly eating advice

THERAPISTS are to visit nursing homes in Lothians to dispense advice on swallowing food.

The pilot scheme is targeting elderly people who have difficulties consuming food and liquids and will help residents and staff.

The NHS Lothian trial will comprise four homes in East Lothian and Midlothian. It is hoped with attention paid to eating and drinking it will help frail pensioners enjoy meal times together.

As part of that drive, picture menus of food may be introduced, with health chiefs considering bringing in lunch club ideas and changing the "institutionalised" way in which lunch and dinner are dished out.

Studies have shown that speech therapists can help elderly people control their weight and nutrition.

Lucie McAnespie, acting adult speech and language therapy manager, said: "Given greater resources, we could improve our service to people living in nursing homes."
