Theatre review: Big mac
BIG MAC
SWEET ECA (VENUE 186)
A HOLLYWOOD noir thriller with obvious aspirations towards being a supernatural version of Elmore Leonard or Raymond Chandler, this amateur play hits all the genre's structural plot points without ever actually thrilling.
There's the pushy femme fatale; the dumb lunk of a husband (a bit-part movie actor, in this case) who does what he's told; the corrupt gumshoe; the connected film producer who comes to a sticky end – and this play's own invention, a trio of apparently satanic agents pushing things to their worst conclusion.
What's missing, sadly, are those crucial elements of mystery and surprise.
