Theatre plans to stage 16 musicals a day
THE first Fringe venue dedicated entirely to musicals is expecting to feature up to 16 shows a day at this year's event.
The George Square Theatre will host an exclusive programme of new and classic productions, in what is being dubbed a "mini-musicals festival".
It will mark the theatre's return as a Fringe venue after major refurbishment work.
It will have two stages for musicals, with seating for 600 people, as well as a free space with a piano for impromptu sing-a-longs.
The move follows the success of two musicals last year – one based on the life of former PM Tony Blair and another based on the 70s porn film Debbie Does Dallas.
The idea is a joint venture launched by the University of Edinburgh Festivals Office, the Pleasance, and Chris Grady, founder of the Musical Theatre Matters company.
Amber Rimmer, venue and performer manager at the Fringe, added: "It's great to see musical theatre enjoying continued support at Fringe 2008."
