The Weekender

BY Chitra Ramaswamy

Cinema

If the summer blockbusters that cater more for teenage boys (Wanted, anyone?) than the rest of us aren't doing it for you, our top film recommendation this weekend is The Visitor. A sweet but never saccharine flick from the director of The Station Agent, it's about the relationship between a New York professor and an immigrant couple who end up staying with him.

On general release

Theatre

In Aberdeen, at the newly reopened Lemon Tree, check out Lest We Forget, a new play from local writer Mike Gibb marking the 20th anniversary of the Piper Alpha oil rig disaster. Commissioned by Aberdeen Performing Arts, it's all part of the rebirth of Aberdeen's much loved and nearly lost arts centre so go along and show a bit of support.

Until Monday, 7.30pm, Saturday matinee 2.30pm

Music

We cannot ignore the arrival of the pint-sized princess in Glasgow for a four-night run at the SECC. KYLIEX2008 may be a bit of an uninspired show title but it's a guaranteed glamorous night out. Expect old hits and new, lots of Kylie sidling up to oiled up men with buff biceps, and enough costume changes to dress the Oscars.

July 5-9, SECC Glasgow

Events

Finally, head over to the historic setting of Edinburgh's Prestonfield House with your family and friends to The World's Most Famous Scottish Show. The renowned evening of Scottish music, costume, bagpipes, fiddles and dance comes with wine and dinner and features World Champion pipers, Highland dancers, fiddle players, and accordionists. All in kilts, natch.

From 7pm, July 6-October 9, www.scottishshow.com
