The Scotsman triumphs at press 'Oscars'

THE Scotsman won a haul of awards at the "Oscars" of the Scottish newspaper industry last night.

Bill Jamieson led the charge, winning both journalist of the year and financial/business journalist for his coverage and analysis of the financial turmoil of the past 12 months.

Mr Jamieson's piece on the dramatic downfall of Lehman Brothers last September attracted worldwide attention. His article headlined How The Masters Of The Universe Ran Amok and Cost Us The Earth attracted almost 500,000 page views on the internet by the end of 2008.

The Scotsman's business editor, Peter McMahon, was runner-up to Mr Jamieson for financial journalist, in the Scottish Press Awards ceremony at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow. Gerri Peev took scoop of the year for her interview with Barack Obama's adviser Samantha Power, who described Democratic rival Hillary Clinton as "a monster".

Gaelic editor Alasdair H Caimbeul won Gaelic journalist of the year, while Jane Barlow was named sports photographer of the year. The Scotsman also won the coveted campaign of the year for HBOS – The Questions That Must Be Answered.

Tom English, who writes for The Scotsman sister paper Scotland on Sunday, won sports feature writer of the year, and Peter Ross, who also writes for the title, took both the feature writer of the year and magazine writer award. Weekly paper of the year was the Falkirk Herald, owned by Johnston Press, publishers of The Scotsman.
