The best sushi restaurants
IF THERE was a medal for culinary and commercial bravery, then it should go to Craig Ellis for opening Scotland’s first sushi bar, Fusion (41 Byres Road, Glasgow, tel: 0141-339 3666).
A hit from the off, it enabled Ellis to go one step further and plant OKO (68 Ingram Street, Glasgow, tel: 0141-572 1500) in the Merchant City.
Briefly, OKO was the only place in Scotland to have a conveyor belt of sushi pass temptingly before diners’ eyes but it wasn’t long before the Yo! Sushi chain (66 Rose Street, Edinburgh, tel: 0131-220 6040) established a bridgehead in the country and upped the ante by adding a drinks robo waiter to the mix. All of which is good fun and in keeping with sushi’s image as the food of choice for the young urban hipster.
However, if you prefer to eat your sushi in more elegant surroundings then the North Bridge Brasserie in the Scotsman Hotel (20 North Bridge, Edinburgh, tel: 0131-622 2900) should not be overlooked. Yellow fin tuna sashimi, Californian rolls and king prawn maki all pitch up in what used to be this newspaper’s lobby. They are pretty hot on the tempura front as well.
