Ten Questions: Cath Karlin, partner at law firm HBJ Gateley Wareing
41, from Liberton, is a partner at law firm HBJ Gateley Wareing
1 What is your earliest memory of Edinburgh?
My earliest memory is coming through from Glasgow in the summer of 1976 to visit Edinburgh Castle. I was mesmerised by the grandeur of the castle. I also remember crunching on the obligatory Edinburgh rock.
2 What are your memories of school?
My first school was Dowanhill Primary in the west end of Glasgow. My earliest memory is volunteering to sing Amazing Grace (aged 5) and forgetting the words.
3 Where is your favourite place in Edinburgh and why?
Harvey Nichols, especially the handbag department. I also enjoy meeting friends there. A bit tragic I know but what did we do without it?
4 What are the best things about Edinburgh?
The size of the city, the stunning architecture and the tourist attractions such as the Castle and Mary King's Close. I recently organised a conference for American and European lawyers and had the rare opportunity to see the city through tourists' eyes. They were blown away!
5 What would you change about the city?
I would put a stop to the permanent road works.
6 Describe a perfect Edinburgh day/night out.
Lunch at The Dogs or the Witchery followed by a tour of the shops on George Street culminating with a visit to Multrees Walk. I thoroughly enjoy evenings out to the Whisky Society.
7 Which sports interest you?
I'm not really the sporting type.
8 What was your most embarrassing moment?
I did manage to lock myself out of my then flat in Cockburn Street on a very cold December day, covered in paint and wearing only my underwear.
9 What is your greatest achievement?
Helping to bring collaborative law to Scotland. I really believe in the concept of a friendly divorce.
