Ten Questions: William Hammes

WILLIAM HAMMES, 53, is general manager of Brown Paper Tickets. He lives on Regent Terrace

1 What is your earliest memory of Edinburgh? In 1995 we were on holiday in Scotland. It was the release date for Braveheart and we went along to see it. Fell in love with the whole Scotland thing as a result. However, being English, we were mindful to keep quiet on exiting the cinema!

2 What are your memories of school? Early days in school for me were idyllic. A small rural village in Cheshire and about 20 kids in the whole school. It was like a big family!

3 Where is your favourite place in Edinburgh and why? This is hard, there are so many! However, overall I would say The Water of Leith. I'm lucky to work in Dean Village for Brown Paper Tickets UK (A new ticketing company here in Edinburgh) and our office is right by the water. I feel so lucky to be able to look out of my window and be surrounded by such beauty.

4 What are the best things about Edinburgh? Edinburgh has a big city feel but is easy to get around in – what an amazing bus service! Everything is to hand, it's visually appealing and its great fun!

5 What would you change about the city? As an Englishman, dare I mention the new parliament building? What were you guys thinking? How does this building exemplify one of the most beautiful cities in the world, which is steeped in history, culture and pride. It's like putting a lava lamp in the reception of the Balmoral.

6 Describe a perfect Edinburgh day/night out Weather permitting, start off with a walk along the Water of Leith. Up to the Grassmarket for lunch and a drink. Catch an afternoon play at the Lyceum. Then to the Royal Mile – sorry, I'm still a tourist – as I just love the shops and atmosphere there. Change for dinner and then either a good show, or maybe while away the evening in the Jazz Bar.

7 Which sports interest you? It's Scotland, golf, of course! The rugby is good too, but I don't follow football. Oh yeah... Roller Derby! If you don't know, find out. Its really great fun and the girls are rough, tough and gorgeous. Come on Auld Reekie Roller Girls!

8 What was your most embarrassing moment? I once worked as a wedding photographer. What kind of an idiot would turn up at the church and actually start taking photos, before realising… "This is the wrong wedding!"

9 What is your greatest achievement? Realising, eventually, that life with God is a whole lot easier than without him!

10 Sum up Edinburgh in three words. Romantic. Exciting. Alive!
