Ten Questions: Priscilla Turner

Priscilla Turner, 51, is an organiser of the Great Scottish Walk, which this year will be taking place on June 22.

1 What is your earliest memory of Edinburgh? When I was seven years old my father was in Edinburgh for work. I remember visiting Edinburgh Castle as part of a family day out and being allowed to sit on one of the cannons. I recall clearly the views of Princes Street across to the Firth of Forth.

2 What are your memories of school? I went to school in Berkshire and I remember my history teacher, who was Scottish, telling the story of Robert the Bruce hiding in the cave and how he watched a spider struggling to build its web. I loved listening to that teacher's stories – but then I did have a bit of a crush on him.

3 Where is your favourite place in Edinburgh and why? Arthur's Seat because that's where my husband proposed to me ten years ago.

4 What are the best things about Edinburgh? The Seven Hills, the views and Jenners.

5 What would you change about the city? Tickets for the Festival and the Fringe are getting ever more expensive. I would like these events to be more accessible to local people.

6 Describe a perfect Edinburgh day/night out A brisk walk in Holyrood Park, followed by a tour around the National Gallery and an evening at the Traverse Theatre. I will never forget a memorable evening spent there with John Hegley.

7 Which sports interest you? I love walking, which is one of the reasons why I love being the organizer for the Great Scottish and Wee Scottish Walks. Aside from walking though when I retire I have promised to take up golf. I will also jump at the chance to see the Commonwealth Games when they come to Glasgow 2014.

8 What was your most embarrassing moment? Last year, for our anniversary, my husband whisked me off to a smart hotel outside Aberdeen where some friends were waiting. Unfortunately, he had forgotten to alert me to the fact that the dress code was smart so I was turned up in a track suit and trainers expecting to stay in a B&B.

9 What is your greatest achievement? Getting nearly 2000 Scottish school children walking in the Wee Walks last year. It was good fun for everyone. I enjoy bringing and watching communities support each other. It was fantastic teamwork.
