Ten Questions: Peter Buckley Hill, comic

Peter Buckley Hill, 61, is a comic and founded the Free Fringe

What is your earliest memory of Edinburgh? Standing in front of the Wellington statue at the East End of Princes Street, looking at a map, and having three different strangers offer help. Wouldn't happen in London.

What are your memories of school? It wasn't in the city, but in darkest England. Schools are terrible places, and I'm glad there's no reincarnation because I wouldn't want to go through that again.

Where is your favourite place in Edinburgh and why? The Canons' Gait – nice pub, good memories, good beer – but also anywhere that puts on Free Fringe shows.

What are the best things about Edinburgh? The Fringe. The pubs. The chips. The people. The way the buses let you off before the stop but don't let you on until the stop.

What would you change about the city? The tramworks. The machines that read your ridacards on the buses.

Describe a perfect Edinburgh day/night out: When it's not Fringe time I'd choose pottering around the city noticing small interesting bits, deciding not to go up Arthur's Seat, fighting the fudge urge and then a night at The Stand comedy club.

Which sports interest you? Few. It's an odd boy who doesn't like sport.

What was your most embarrassing moment? Wearing a kilt at the last night of my 2007 Free Fringe show, and then forgetting this fact and striking a mock lead guitarist pose with my foot high on a chair. The front row moved 3ft backwards without leaving their seats.

What is your greatest achievement? The Free Fringe. I take a certain amount of credit for bringing the Fringe back to where it always should have been; cheap, accessible and around the city of Edinburgh. But there's still more to do.

Describe Edinburgh in three words: Jolly, jolly spiffing.
