Ten Questions: Lesley Moses

LESLEY MOSES, 38, who lives in Leith Street, is creative director of the recently opened Sublime Hair Design, in the Grassmarket.

What is your earliest memory of Edinburgh? I first came here in February 2002 and I woke up on my first morning and it was snowing! I Rolled down the slopes and built a snow woman. You should have seen the styling I gave her! I was thinking of moving here and everyone told me it was great during the summer. But I thought it would be best to come in winter and get a better idea of whether I'd like to live here. Now when I go back to Cape Town I miss the rain!

What are your memories of school? I went to Bellville Senior Secondary School in Cape Town in the 1980, during the apartheid. I remember there was constant rioting and we even got tear gassed by the riot police. All the students got involved in boycotting the buses, and we'd have meetings after school.

Where is your favourite place in Edinburgh and why? Pentlands, Arthur's Seat, Calton Hill - anything that allows you to climb.

What are the best things about Edinburgh? It's a city but feels like a village. It's really friendly and you're bound to run into people you know when you're walking around.

What would you change about the city? It would be nice if shops were open later at night. It would be great to go anywhere and get anything you want whatever the time. We're one of the few salons that is open till 9pm during the week.

Describe a perfect Edinburgh day/night out I'd start by power-walking up Calton Hill to watch the sunrise, then have a boozy lunch with good friends in The Outsider. After that, I'd catch a film at the Cameo.

Which sports interest you? I like gymnastics and cycling, and watching rugby.

What was your most embarrassing moment? Sitting outside Cabaret Voltaire, taking a break from a wild night, I got chatting to a super glamorous lady. Chatted away for a good hour, and during a brief intermission to the toilet realised that I was sporting a very monstrous bogie ... she hadn't the heart to tell me!

What is your greatest achievement? No question, Sublime Hair!

Sum up Edinburgh in three words. Soulful, wholesome and picturesque.
