Teenager held over mother-of-four's death

A 16-year-old has been arrested in connection with the death of a mother-of-four in a large scale disturbance, police today said.

Jeannie Smith, 41, died after an incident involving at least 20 people in Airdrie last weekend.

The teenage male is currently in police custody and is expected to appear in court tomorrow.

Two other males, aged 14 and 17, have also been reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with incident last weekend.

The nursing home worker died a short time after being taken to Monklands Districts Hospital last Saturday.

She was one of a number of people taken to the hospital after what police described as a "large scale disturbance" in a park area at Calderglen Court in Airdrie.

This continued into nearby Oronsay Road, where the dead woman lived.

Detectives launched a murder inquiry soon after her death.

Police and forensic experts searched the area in a bid to gather evidence from the scene. Drains in the street were searched.

Police had said that a number of people were in the area at the time and appealed for witnesses to come forward.
