Taxman jailed for helping to con Revenue
A LOTHIAN-BASED tax worker who was involved in a £240,000 tax scam was today beginning a 30-month jail sentence.
Imran Ayub passed on confidential information about genuine claimants to other people, who used it to claim benefits.
Ayub, 25, of Woodlands, Glasgow, was an advisor on the Tax Credit Helpline in Livingston.
He earlier pleaded guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court to defrauding the Inland Revenue of 146,377 between 2003 and 2004.
Another employee at the centre, Nasir Ahmed, of Newarthill, Motherwell, pleaded guilty to defrauding the Revenue of 98,475
Thousands of pounds were diverted into the bank accounts of Thomas McLaughlin, 48, and Zahid Anwar, 26, both from Glasgow, who were also jailed.
