Talk of the Town: Tweet me right,says our top cop

EDINBURGH’S police are a highly visible presence on the streets - but also online with Lothian and Borders Chief Superintendent Malcolm Graham now using social networking site Twitter.

The new City of Edinburgh Commander can be contacted via @EdPoliceChief. Malcolm hopes the new feed will allow the police to quickly spread important information, eg the cancellation of a major event such as Hogmanay. “Before Twitter there was a delay between making a decision and people finding out,” he said.

However, tweeters have been warned not to report crime via Twitter. Malcolm’s opening tweet said: “This account isn’t monitored 24/7 so please don’t report crime here – call 999 in an emergency.”

Bieblers pleas for parade fail to inspire Capital fans

THE best efforts of an Edinburgh Justin Bieber fan (or a “Biebler”) to get a parade honouring his hero off the ground seem to be falling on deaf ears – something we’ve suspected his fans have had for a while.

Though many of us on Twitter may feel like a day doesn’t go by when some variation of “JUSTIN BIEBS 4 EVA OK LOL” isn’t trending, it appears the mere mention of his name does not send every tween into hysterics.

Despite five tweets in an hour and 1000 followers, @Derek_Bieber__ appears to be the only one tweeting on #scotlandbieberparade and at time of writing had received just one retweet. A cursory glance at YouTube also shows last year’s Edinburgh Bieber Parade was more at the level of a (sole) parental escort than a police one.

Given that the purpose of the parades is to show such strength of feeling it convinces young Justin to visit the city, perhaps this is one time we can be glad when the youth of today don’t want to march for a cause.

… And talking of cheese

A COUPLE of months back, Talk championed a great cause when we invited suggestions for the British Cheese Board cheddar anthem.

Now we can reveal the entries that cut it with judges. An accordion-wielding Morris dancer, a rousing pub sing-along and an upbeat techno rendition of God Save Our Cheese made it to the final five, and now the public can vote for their favourite.

Judge Nigel White, secretary of the British Cheese Board, said: “We were astounded by the number of entries. Britain may produce over 700 named cheeses, but this competition has proven beyond doubt that Cheddar is by far and away the nation’s favourite.
