Talk of the Town: Sweet addition to team’s glory story

LEGEND has it that in his pomp Gazza once walked into a Newcastle newsagent and paid for Mars bars to be dished out to dozens of local kids.

Now after girl power helped transform the fortunes of Fernieside Colts under-14s, young footballers there are also helping themselves to a chocolate treat.

The News told recently how four new female players had helped catapult the side to league glory, and last weekend club leader Stewart Laird received this anonymous letter, which included the words “Mars bars for all” and a £20 note tucked inside.

Stewart is inviting the big-hearted reader to the team’s fun day at Drum Park, from 1-5pm on Sunday.

Reports the mystery benefactor is now being courted by Rangers FC couldn’t be confirmed.

Tony’s latest work takes home town by storm

HE’S the man responsible for scores of grizzly deaths in the Capital over the last few years.

Now he’s back, but there’s no need for fresh panic on our streets because city author Tony Black’s new novel, The Storm Without, is based in his birthplace of Ayr.

It comes just a few months after the prolific writer released Murder Mile, which featured a serial killer stalking Edinburgh.

Starring a Burns-quoting former policeman, The Storm Without is released in July, shortly before Tony appears at the Edinburgh Book Festival.

Looking to score customers

BACK to the football, and fans were today becoming couch potatoes as the European Championships got under way.

A survey reveals that men in Scotland feel more emotional about football than the birth of their first child.

With the average follower set to watch at least 18 hours of action on telly, it suggests “it’s clearly important that they have the right size screen”.

The source of the survey? Comet, which just so happens to have “a range of TV sizes to suit the needs of all football fans”.
