Talk of the Town: 2012 . . you have all been warned
Those living next to the tram works are well acquainted with the marketing campaigns of the firm delivering the route. But residents of Haymarket were forced into a double take after a poster of a devastated cityscape went up with the strapline "2012 – We Were Warned".
Luckily, it seems the poster is for the disaster movie 2012 and not a sign of things to come from the trams.
Roadside delivery
Being a seasoned crime reporter didn't prepare Jane Hamilton for her latest role – emergency midwife. The former Evening News hack was called upon to deliver a baby by the roadside. Taking her pregnant cousin to the hospital, her passenger suddenly announced the time had come. She dialled 999, but had to be talked through the procedure over the phone before the ambulance arrived. "The baby was fine," says Jane. "But my car window got broken in the melee and on the way home I noticed a pair of undies, pyjama bottoms, slippers and, yuk, loads of blood on my passenger seat. I swear, if I'd got stopped on the way home by the cops, they'd have been searching the boot of the car."
Cold Case actress freezing
When she received the call to film in Italy, Edinburgh-born, LA-based actress Louise Linton was dreaming of sunshine and outdoor lunches. But the reality for the sometime Cold Case star has been somewhat different.
"It's freezing, thunder and rain most days," she says. "And to think I left my puffa jacket in Edinburgh."
The end result could be next year's off-beat hit. Five Hours – starring Jordan Bridges, of the famous acting clan – is the story of a small-town Italian policeman "pursuing his passion for breakdancing while dealing with a secret from his past".
That sinking feeling
Spotted: a man with a handheld roller, apparently cleaning the outside of the Commie Pool. With at least a year and half before the pool re-opens, we can't help wondering whether it will take him that long to finish the job. Perhaps with the Forth Bridge now covered in long-lasting paint, the Capital needs a new never-ending task. "It's like cleaning the Commie Pool" doesn't have quite the same ring though.
Currie in a muddle
Currie rugby club are looking forward tomorrow night to continuing a successful Scottish Hydro Premiership campaign against Heriots or is it Boroughmuir or maybe Watsonians at Malleny Park?
Confusion is justified because for Currie's last home game opponents Glasgow Hawks were billed in the official match programme as "West of Scotland" even though the appended list of players names was correct.
A "printer's error" was blamed. Tusk, tusk. Such things would never happen here at the Evening Standard.
