Talk of the town

Queen star May is Grubb's Best Friend

Former Lord Provost Eric Milligan used to like getting his picture taken with his famous guests like Nancy Sinatra and Nelson Mandela. However, the latest holder of the office, the genial councillor George Grubb, has effortless trumped him in the celebrity friend stakes.

Councillor Grubb is a long-standing acquaintance of rock legend Brian May, who was in town last week to attend the Queen musical We Will Rock You at the Playhouse. "We've met four or five times. The first time was after the Live Aid concert 25 years ago," says the Lib Dem politician and Kirk minister, adding: "My aunt once sold a house to him."

Footballers are up for the fight . . with each other

There were fireworks at Forfar when Penicuik Athletic junior football team visited and the home club, West End, had two players sent off for fighting each other!

Despite the double blow, Penicuik, trailing 1-0, couldn't snatch an equaliser. There was compensation though, according to one bystander, in the form of an entertaining sideshow. Local club officials realised both protagonists had been dispatched to the SAME dressing room, forcing a stampede to ensure they were kept apart behind those closed doors!

Foulkes in a tight squeeze

The latest of Lothian MSP George Foulkes' regular video postings on YouTube has raised concerns about our politicians' working conditions.

Despite its hefty 400m-plus price tag, it appears Lord Foulkes is being forced to work at the Scottish Parliament in a dingy cupboard, or at the very least he could use a hand finding the light switch.

Open wide for dental drinks

It will be a cocktail party with a difference. The wine will be "for medicinal purposes", the food sugar-free – and the venue a dental surgery.

Craigentinny Dental Care in Duddingston Crescent is hosting what is believed to be the Capital's first open evening for nervous dental patients on Wednesday, 25 November.

"It's a bridge to help patients who are too anxious even to come in for an appointment," says partner Fraser Hendrie.

4k to hamper your budget

Most of us might be looking to squeeze the Christmas budget a little further this year, but that hasn't stopped Jenners from launching a 4,000 "ultimate luxury hamper".

It is "packed with goodies" including Krug Champagnes and a sterling silver quaich.

It does beg the question, who exactly is going to buy them?

Sometime Edinburgh resident Sir Fred Goodwin could afford half a dozen, but whether he'd have the brass neck is another matter entirely.
