Suspected swine flu case investigated

A NEW probable case of swine flu is being investigated in the Lothians.

The patient had travelled to Las Vegas, Nevada, before returning to Edinburgh via New York.

The individual is being treated at home with anti-virals and is not showing cause for clinical concern. There are a further two possible cases being investigated in the Lothians.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "The fact we have two new probable cases of influenza A (H1N1) in Scotland, while disappointing, should not surprise us and should not be seen as a cause for alarm.

"But it does of course demonstrate that we must remain vigilant for the new cases.

"Our containment strategy has so far been successful. However, with a new virus like influenza A (H1N1) we cannot take any chances.

"It is still too early to say how this virus will behave in the longer term, so we will continue to take every precaution."
