Sun prompts ozone alert

WARM weather across much of the UK is set to bring the first summer smog, the government has warned.

High ozone levels were forecast yesterday for England and Scotland, and are specifically predicted south of the Border over the weekend. The high ozone – formed when sunlight interacts with nitrogen dioxide and other pollutants – will persist until at least Monday.

Ground-level ozone can affect some people's breathing and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said people should refrain from exercising outdoors in the afternoon.
