Suicide rate up in Lothians

MORE people killed themselves in 2008 in the Lothians than in any other year since the early 1980s.

Statistics released from ISD Scotland – the country's official gatherer of health figures – showed there were 136 suicides in the area last year.

This is a rise of more than 30 from the year before, and the most since records began in 1982.

It mirrors a gradual rise nationwide, and will cause concern for health chiefs.

The increase coincides with record numbers of people being diagnosed with depression.
