Sturgeon hails new cancer care facility

CANCER services on Tayside received a boost yesterday with the opening of a new linear accel- erator, which generates high-energy X-rays, and refurbished radiotherapy department at Dundee's Ninewells Hospital.

The new 7 million facility, which was officially opened by Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish health secretary, is expected to benefit almost 1,500 patients being treated for cancer at the hospital each year.

Ninewells hosts one of the five Scottish cancer centres and provides radiotherapy services to the population of both Tayside and North East Fife.

Ms Sturgeon said: "This new linear accelerator will be of immense benefit to cancer patients in Tayside and Fife. It's a very sophisticated, state-of-the-art piece of medical equipment which will allow hospital staff at Ninewells Hospital to direct radiotherapy treatment for hun-dreds of patients every year.

"I am confident that this machine will help NHS Tayside staff to continue delivering high-quality cancer care."
