Sturgeon backs direct pay plan

THE health secretary has urged more disabled and elderly people requiring care to take advantage of the direct payments system.

Nicola Sturgeon told an NHS Lothian meeting that she was eager for more people to use the scheme, which sees the city council pay people directly for them to then employ their own carer.

The Evening News revealed last week there has been a huge increase in people using direct payments since the council announced its controversial plan to re-tender the contracts for 800 of the most vulnerable people.
