Student debt in Scotland rises to a massive £2bn
STUDENT debt in Scotland has risen to more than £2 billion, according to new statistics.
Despite an SNP election vow to ditch student debt, borrowing increased by 8 per cent to 212.8m in 2007-8 said the Student Loans Company.
Claire Baker, a spokesman for Labour, described the figures as "damning".
At the end of the last financial year there were 370,000 borrowers with nearly three-quarters in the process of being repaid.
The average outstanding balance, which includes people still studying, is 5,550.
But the figures do not include the additional loans taken out to cover graduate endowments after the scheme was scrapped.
