Street bloodbath as one shot dead, another wounded in gang dispute

A MURDER inquiry has been launched after a double shooting outside a city-centre pub.

Two men, both aged 42, were targeted at the Waldorf Bar in Glasgow on Monday night. They were taken to the Royal Infirmary, where one of them died early yesterday.

The dead man was named last night by police as George Redmond, of Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire.

The other victim, who was named locally as John McGuire, was still in hospital last night. He was said to be in a serious but stable condition.

The shootings are understood to relate to a gangland dispute.

It is believed the gunman shot Mr Redmond in the neck and Mr McGuire in the chest, before escaping on a motorcycle.

Police were called to the pub following reports of a disturbance in Cambridge Street at 10:25pm, and the road was sealed off between Renfrew Street and Cowcaddens Road as forensic teams examined the scene.

The pub, which is between a Farmfoods shop and a Tote bookmaker's, is near Sauchiehall Street, on the edge of Garnethill and opposite the Thistle Hotel.

Police are keen to speak to people who were in the area at the time, particularly guests who were staying at the hotel.

The Thistle remained open yesterday, but its guests were being directed through a side entrance in Renfrew Street. Several shops in the area were also closed.

Detective Superintendent John Riggans, who is leading the murder investigation, said last night: "Throughout the day we have been looking at all the potential motives for this crime, and attempting to piece together the victims' last known movements.

"At this time we have been unable to interview the surviving victim, so do not have a description of the suspect involved.

"We are satisfied however with the progression of the investigation so far."

DS Riggans renewed his appeal for witnesses to come forward. He said: "I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the Waldorf bar on Cambridge Street at any time during the day or evening yesterday, or in the area around the time of the shooting, to contact police."

The officer also tried to reassure members of the public.

He said: "I completely understand concerns by the local community of this type of crime happening on their doorstep, and I would stress everything will be done to catch the person responsible. Extra patrols are in the area and members of the public are encouraged to speak to an officer if they have any concerns."
