Statue tribute to Jock Stein
PROPOSALS have been submitted to erect a statue of legendary Celtic and Scotland manager Jock Stein in his hometown.
Bosses at South Lanarkshire Council have revealed that they are considering a proposal to honour Stein with a statue in Hamilton, Lanarkshire.
SNP councillor Barry Douglas said: "If there was any way to secure funding for it, I would certainly support it."
Building engineer and football fan Graham Anderson, 35, from Blantyre, Lanarkshire, has lobbied the council to have a statue to Stein erected. He said: "Although we have the Jock Stein Sports Centre, I feel he deserves a more tangible tribute."
Stein was branded "immortal" by fellow Scot Bill Shankly after leading Celtic to European Cup glory in 1967.
He also managed Scotland's national side, and died of a heart attack on 10 September, 1985 – hours after seeing his side qualify for the World Cup.
