Stainless steel pillars to honour 52 victims of 2005 London bombing attacks

THE final design for a memorial to be erected to honour the 52 victims of the bomb attacks in London on 7 July, 2005 was released yesterday.

Architects worked with relatives of the dead and with the Angel of the North sculptor, Antony Gormley, on the Hyde Park memorial.

It comprises 52 stainless steel pillars, each 3m tall and about 15cm square. Each will represent one of the victims and each will be unique as a result of the casting process. A plaque naming each of the victims will be placed in a grass bank nearby.

The pillars will be grouped in four clusters, reflecting the separate suicide bombs: the Tube explosions at Edgware Road, Russell Square and Aldgate and the bombing of the No 30 bus near Tavistock Square.

Subject to planning permission, work is expected to begin in the autumn and be completed in time for an official unveiling on 7 July next year.

A spokesman for the six families represented on the advisory panel said: "This memorial is a fitting tribute, ensuring that the world will never forget them."
