St John's can create swine flu treatment space say activists
ST JOHN'S Hospital in Livingston could free up hundreds of extra beds in the event of a swine flu epidemic, it has been claimed.
Campaigners working to secure additional services for the West Lothian hospital said they were furious that 50 new beds were being created at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary by means of a reshuffle of office staff.
What would be far more effective, they said, would be returning services such as general surgery and orthopaedic departments to Howden, creating huge amounts of space at Little France.
Councillor Ellen Glass of the Action to Save St John's group, said: "We have more than enough space here, and the people of West Lothian want to see the return of services that were taken away from us. If the health board had thought about St John's they could have moved services here and had all the space they wanted at the ERI."
