St Andrews student killed in car crash

A STUDENT at St Andrews University has been killed in a road accident in the United States.

Richard Meredith, 21, had just returned to his home in Tennessee for the Christmas holiday break.

News of his death was relayed to staff and students yesterday by the university's vice-principal, Stephen Magee. He said Mr Meredith was a passenger in a car involved in an accident in Kentucky on Sunday.

Mr Magee added: "Richard was a bright and popular arts student studying ancient history and archaeology, and had been looking forward to returning to be with us in St Andrews in the second semester."

Mr Meredith is the fourth St Andrews student to die in tragic circumstances over the last three years. In May last year, Matthew Howell was killed after he plunged down a stairwell while on an exchange visit to St Petersburg, Russia.
