Speeding fine issued for 8mph scooter

A DISABLED grandmother spoke of her shock yesterday after receiving a speeding ticket accusing her of travelling at 41mph on her mobility scooter.

Janice Carrick was told a roadside camera had caught her exceeding the 30mph limit on her Meyra 12-volt electric scooter – which has a top speed of 8mph.

At the time of the alleged incident, Ms Carrick's vehicle was in for repairs and she was attending a hospital appointment almost 40 miles away.

It is thought that the mix-up may have been the result of someone cloning a number plate.

Ms Carrick, 53, who suffers hearing and mobility problems, uses the scooter to go shopping locally from her home in Denaby, near Doncaster, south Yorkshire.

However, she received a fixed-penalty notice from police telling her that there was photographic evidence of her speeding in Otley Road, Leeds.

Last night, Ms Carrick said: "I normally never go further than Mexborough or Conisbrough for my shopping.

"I'd need to make a few modifications to my scooter to be able to get to Leeds, let alone travel at 41mph."

Last night, it emerged that West Yorkshire's Safety Casualty Reduction Partnership had re-examined the photographic evidence and found that the vehicle involved in the alleged speeding offence was not a four-wheel electric mobility scooter.
