Speculation over Coulson successor mounts swiftly

THE BBC's former chief political correspondent Guto Harri, pictured, was last night made the favourite to replace Andy Coulson as director of communications in Downing Street.

The Welsh former journalist is currently London mayor Boris Johnson's chief spin doctor and has been talked of for several months as a possible replacement for Mr Coulson.

The consensus among commentators is that Mr Cameron needs somebody from outside his Old Etonian inner circle. Other names in the frame include the Sun's former political editor George Pascoe Watson and the Daily Telegraph's deputy editor Benedict Brogan.

However, many commentators' favourite is the Independent's former deputy editor Ian Birrell, who is a speech writer for Mr Cameron and, as such, is part of his inner circle already.
