Spectators hit in eyes by fireworks ash

SPECTATORS at this year's Festival Fireworks Concert were hit in the eyes by falling embers as they watched the display on Sunday night.

At least six people required first-aid treatment for their injuries, and a health and safety investigation will be launched in a bid to avoid a repeat of the problem in subsequent similar displays.

Jim Campbell, 37, from Leith, had debris fall in his eyes as he watched from the fountain in Princes Street Gardens. His friend was also showered with falling pieces.

He said: "I was worried she was missing the best part and saw her head was down.

"I asked her why and she said it was because she had bits in her eye.

"I was hit on the leg as well."

Festivals champion, Councillor Steve Cardownie, admitted ash also fell in his eyes as he watched from the Ross Bandstand.

He said: "I was very surprised to see some embers coming down.

"It's regrettable that some people suffered minor injuries.

"This is definitely a cause for concern and there will be a health and safety debriefing so we can look at what can be done for next year."
