South Asians most likely to get diabetes

PEOPLE of south Asian origin are more likely to contract diabetes than the rest of the population, a city university has found.

The research by Edinburgh University found that people from countries like India are up to four times more susceptible.

The study showed that once they were diagnosed – even though they receive equal healthcare – they are more likely to suffer eye complications and higher blood sugar levels.

The research followed the experiences of 10,500 patients with type-two diabetes, 176 of whom were of south Asian origin.

Dr Colin Fischbacher, of the university's school of clinical sciences and community health, said: "This study shows that south Asians are more likely to get diabetes and that they suffer more complications.

"It is very encouraging to know that they receive the same high standard of medical care, but we need to ensure that more is done to control their diabetes and to prevent the potentially devastating complications."
