South Asian women's charity picks up top national awards

A PROJECT to help South Asian women living in Edinburgh overcome barriers and lead healthier lives was among the winners at the TFN Scottish Charity Awards.

The Nari Kallyan Shangho health and welfare project, which won the community action award, serves more than 200 women and children every week, providing childcare and training to help find work experience for women with little or no formal education.

Chair of Nari Kallyan Shangho, Rohini Sharma Joshi, said: "This accolade gives a real boost to staff and volunteers as they worked hard to provide much needed services to disadvantaged women and children in the South Asian communities in Edinburgh."

Edinburgh-based charity Bethany Christian Trust was also among the winners at the gala awards evening in Edinburgh's Mansfield Traquair Centre on Thursday night.

Bethany Christian Trust won the charity of the year award for its work helping homeless and vulnerable people across Scotland.

Chief executive, Iain Gordon, said: "It is very encouraging to have our work commended, especially when the need for our services is greater than ever."
