John McGill (Letters, 2 February) is mistaken in suggesting that same-sex marriage was not in the SNP manifesto for the 2011 Holyrood election. It was. It was also in the manifestos of the Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green parties.
Between them, those parties won 113 of 129 seats, with 80 per cent of the popular vote. For the Scottish Government to proceed with same-sex marriage in the careful and considered way it has, is perfectly consistent with best democratic practice.
