Somerville wants more honesty over trams

ONE of the project's leading critics has called for "more honesty" from tram bosses in 2011, labelling 2010 an "annus horribilis" for the embattled scheme.

SNP Lothians MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville, pictured right, said she doubted whether trams would be running in the Capital within the next 12 months or even in 2012.

She said: "Edinburgh's trams certainly won't be taking anyone to work in 2011 and I'd be surprised if they are taking anyone in Edinburgh anywhere in 2012 either.

"This has been an annus horribilis for Edinburgh's tram project and the people of Edinburgh are paying the price.

"Residents of Leith knew TIE were having a laugh when they put up the signs saying the tram would arrive in 2011. Now they know the tram will never arrive on Leith Walk."

She added: "The tram project was behind schedule and over budget at the start of 2010.

"This new year let's have some honesty from TIE, a fresh start and answers to some key questions - starting with when the tram will be running."

The first section of the tram line to be built now looks certain to run between Edinburgh Airport and St Andrew Square, although tram firm TIE has said it remains committed to building the full route as far as Newhaven.

An updated business case for the project, which was released last month, said it was hoped completion of the airport to St Andrew Square section could be achieved by the end of 2012 or the start of 2013.
