Solo travel on the rise - even for couples

The number of Britons holidaying alone has doubled in the last two years, a survey today showed.

And many of those choosing to "fly solo" are either married or in a relationship, the poll by travel insurer LV found.

As many as 13 per cent of Britons have gone on holiday on their own in the past 12 months, compared with as few as 6 per cent two years ago, the survey revealed.

Those going it alone have included 41 per cent who were already in a relationship and 27 per cent who were married.

Asked why they wanted to travel on their own, 20 per cent said they wanted an adventure, 16 per cent said they preferred their own company and 7 per cent said friends or partner could not afford a trip.

Topping the list of countries where solo travellers went most often was France, followed by Spain, the United States, Germany and Australia.

Backpackers made up just 8 per cent of the solo holidays, with city breaks the most popular style of vacation for those heading off alone, followed by beach holidays.

Of the solo travellers, 60 per cent said they had a great time, 24 per cent admitting to being nervous before going, while 10 per cent said it was their best ever trip.

Only 3 per cent did not enjoy the experience.

LV travel insurance managing director John O'Roarke said: "Holidaying abroad alone offers the opportunity to meet new people and get a whole new outlook on life.

"However, it's also sensible to consider carefully where you visit and also take a few additional security steps to ensure you can relax and enjoy the trip.

"We'd advise all solo travellers to ensure they follow an itinerary and stay in contact with home if they go off the beaten track."
