SNP accused of breaking pledge on rural schools
THE Scottish Government has been accused of breaking a pledge to protect rural schools from closure after a remote primary was axed.
Ministers have rejected an appeal by parents to call in the decision to close Crossroads Primary near Kilmarnock.
It comes despite recent legislation aimed at providing greater safeguards for smaller rural schools facing closure.
The Scottish Rural Schools Network said the move could encourage councils to close other remote schools to save money.
"It's the first case that could have gone to call-in under the new act," spokesman Sandy Longmuir said yesterday. "It hasn't even got through to the appeal stage."
The network was assured that the case was a "one-off" and the SNP was still committed to rural schools. But Mr Longmuir added: "That's not how other people will be looking at it."
