SNP hits out at data loss
THE SNP today hit out at the UK Government's "appalling" data loss record, claiming more than 13 million records were lost this year, equivalent to 25 every minute.
Home affairs spokesman Pete Wishart said: "These diabolical figures reveal a shockingly cavalier approach to data security by the Labour Government.
"Despite promises of tightened security and high level reviews in light of the loss of the personal details of 35 million child benefit claimants the previous year, there have been nine serious security breaches in 2008."
Mr Wishart said Labour's record on data security was reason enough to abandon ID cards.
He added: "Instead of slashing the Scottish budget by 1bn, Labour ministers should cut their plans for ID cards which are both expensive and intrusive and, judging by the UK Government's track record, a data disaster waiting to happen."
