Snow sports set to last right through May

AFTER the best season for more than 15 years, the Cairngorm ski centre plans to continue weekend snow sports for the rest of this month.

New snow over the Bank Holiday weekend helped boost crowds to more than 700 on the slopes while over 1,000 non-skiers also visited the resort.

Tania Alliod, Cairngorm Mountain's marketing manager, said: "This winter has been a season of superlatives for the ski area with vast snowfall combined with relatively stable weather conditions."

Since the end of November, the Cairngorm centre has opened on 133 days and been stormbound on another 19.

To date there have been 141,000 skier visits, compared to 65,000 last season. Staff have also cleared over one million tons of snow from roads, car parks and the funicular train track.
