Slimming diet could raise risk of heart attack

LOW-carbohydrate slimming diets may damage arteries and increase the risk of heart attacks, research suggests.

Scientists believe cutting out the carbs by following Atkins-style diets impairs the regrowth and repair of blood vessels.

The discovery was made by a US team whose leader was himself on a low-carb diet until he saw the results of the study.

The findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The research suggests that overlooked factors besides fat and cholesterol may be important for a healthy heart and arteries.

"Our research suggests that, at least in animals, these diets could be having adverse cardiovascular effects that are not reflected in simple serum markers," said study leader Professor Anthony Rosenzweig.

"Understanding the mechanisms responsible for these effects, as well as the potential restorative capacity that may counteract vascular disease, could ultimately help guide doctors in advising their patients."

Ellen Mason, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said:

"Low-carb, high-protein diets are not as healthy as eating a balanced diet, because we get the different nutrients our body needs."
