Skye-based paper first to be employee-owned

THE Skye-based West Highland Free Press has become the first newspaper in the UK to be owned by its employees.

The shareholders of West Highland Publishing, publishers of the weekly paper founded in 1972, have agreed to sell the company to ten of its staff.

The founding editor, Brian Wilson, who became a government minister, said: "We wanted the paper to remain independent while offering a great opportunity to the employees."

Director Paul Wood added: "

It marks a defining moment in UK newspaper ownership. I hope this sends out a message that there is a future for newspapers that provide quality content."
