Six-year wait for Royal Ed replacement
IT COULD be six years before a new psychiatric hospital for the city is completed, it has emerged.
In a document presented to NHS Lothian board members, the forecast was that construction would only begin in March 2012, taking three years to complete.
Health chiefs have long wanted the Royal Edinburgh to move out of its ageing premises in Morningside.
Options include building on the present location, or moving departments of the hospital to contribute to new "urban villages" at the Western General or ERI.
The Patients Council at the hospital has previously urged the health board to remain in Morningside, as the community there has built up good relationships over the past decades.
