Six nurses are suspended as drugs vanish

SIX nurses have been suspended from a Lothians hospital after a case full of powerful painkilling drugs went missing.

They have been told to stay away from St John's Hospital in Livingston during an inquiry into the missing morphine.

Health chiefs confirmed they were looking into the matter after the drugs disappeared from the post-op recovery room.

A hospital source was quoted as saying: "The drugs went missing two weeks ago and last week six nursing staff were suspended. There is talk that this is not the first time drugs have gone missing."

NHS Lothian confirmed they were investigating the case and that a "handful" of staff had been suspended.

Human resources chief Alan Boyter said: "The health board has clear and strict policies in place surrounding the use and administration of controlled drugs."

Lothian and Borders Police have launched their own probe into the matter.
