Sir David Murray set to build £4m luxury home in Edinburgh

ONE of Scotland's leading businessman is reported to be spending almost £4 million to build a new luxury home in Edinburgh.

Sir David Murray, who is also chairman of Rangers Football Club, is said to be planning a three-storey mansion boasting 23 rooms.

It will reportedly have a huge bar and wine cellar, a drinks terrace, a gym, swimming pool and library.

Sir David is thought to have paid 2.3m for a substantial plot in the Murrayfield area when it went on the market last year and is set to spend another 1.6m on his new home.

Scotland's sixth-richest man, Sir David has amassed a personal fortune of 720m from business interests ranging from metals to commercial property.

Plans for his new property have been revealed just days after Sir David won permission to partially demolish and rebuild part of another property on Easter Belmont Road, in Corstorphine.

One source close to Sir David, who also owns an estate in Perthshire, said of his plans for the new home in Murrayfield: "This is shaping up to be one of the most expensive houses the city has ever seen."

Blair Stewart, of Edinburgh-based property consultants Stutt and Parker, said: "The hottest area of Edinburgh is undoubtedly Murrayfield.

"We have sold many splendid houses there over the past year – one house had 58 viewings in two weeks and sold for 45 per cent over the asking price."

Born in Ayr, Sir David made his fortune in the metal industry, later expanding into mining, call centres, property and venture capital.

Before moving into football, Murray sponsored extremely successful hockey and basketball teams.

He is believed to have invested around 100m in Rangers over a period of more than 20 years at the club.
