Sir Alex relatives hurt in head-on car smash

THREE close relatives of Sir Alex Ferguson were recovering in hospital yesterday after a serious road crash.

Nadine Ferguson, 30, who is separated from Manchester United manager Sir Alex's son Darren, was trapped in her car along with her children Charlie, ten, and Grace, six.

Firefighters had to free the family from the wreckage of their Vauxhall Corsa after a head-on collision with another car near their home in Cheshire on Tuesday.

Mrs Ferguson was said to be in a serious but comfortable condition at Manchester's Wythenshawe Hospital. Grace suffered minor injuries and was kept in overnight for observation. Charlie, Mrs Ferguson's son from a previous relationship, underwent surgery on Tuesday at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, where he is in a serious but stable condition.

Cheshire Police would not say what injuries were suffered by the family.

Mrs Ferguson's black Vauxhall Corsa was in collision with a Ford Fiesta in Lower Withington, Macclesfield, at around 8:25am on Tuesday. The Fiesta driver, a 17-year-old man, was taken to hospital with leg injuries and was in a stable condition.

Mrs Ferguson was separated from Peterborough United boss Darren, 37, in 2007 after four years of marriage. Last year he was fined 1,500 after admitting assaulting his wife.
