Sikhs mourn the 'Queen of Queens' in city
EDINBURGH'S Sikh community is in mourning after the death of a matriarch known as "the Queen of Queens".
Lachmi Wanti Singh Landa, 86, was cremated in a ceremony at a Leith crematorium yesterday after passing away on Sunday following a short illness.
Mrs Singh's standing within the Sikh community was reflected in a crowd of 500 to 600 mourners.
Mrs Singh was born in Delhi but moved to Gorashah near Lahore in 1944. With the upheaval caused by the partition of the area into India and Pakistan, Mrs Singh and her husband became refugees, a path that eventually led her to Edinburgh in 1958.
Mrs Singh had eight daughters and six sons, with 63 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
